BNY Mellon appoints IT security head

BNY Mellon appoints IT security headFormer Bank of Ireland executive Gary Delaney has been hired by global custodian BNY Mellon as its international chief information security officer (CISO).

Based in Dublin, he will report to Matthew McCormack who leads the firm's Information Security Division within its engineering organisation.

Delaney spent five years as CISO at the Bank of Ireland and was also head of cyber security strategy and group head of technical architecture at Allied Irish Bank.

Prior to his time in Ireland, Delaney also held senior roles at two Australian banks, Commonwealth Bank and National Australia Bank. 

His appointment comes at a time when financial institutions face a growing number of security threats due to an increased use of digital channels as well as technology developments like quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Institutions within Europe also face greater regulatory scrutiny with the introduction of the Digital Operational Resilience Act which came into force in January 2024 and will take full effect as of January 2025.
