Generative AI facing greater EU scrutiny

Generative AI, AI, EU, ChatGPT, AI tools, regulatory, regulation, Europe, EUs AI ActChatGPT and other generative AI tools are likely to face more stringent regulatory examination within Europe, according to the latest version of the EU’s AI Act.

The legislation has progressed to the trialogue stage after close to two years of drafting.

And the latest version of the act will require tools like ChatGPT, which uses generative AI to disclose the copyrighted material used to develop their programming.

It is not the only regulation facing OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT.

Germany has opened a data protection investigation into ChatGPT, as has Italy, and the G7 released a statement at the end of April that it had agreed to promote the “responsible use” of AI.

"Given that generative AI technologies are increasingly prominent across countries and sectors, we recognize the need to take stock in the near term of the opportunities and challenges of these technologies and to continue promoting safety and trust," the G-7 ministers said in a joint declaration.
